The countdown to my BFA show has begun and similar to the stupid Junior Art Portfolio Review I am already a nervous wreck. The difference is that this time I'm alone AND I get to stress about it for 8 months instead of 6 weeks. I do have a sense of what I am doing, although I have so many ideas about what I want to do artwise that my show will probably change a few times over. But the same happened with the stupid JAPR.
The first step is choosing my committee. Then they get to sit around and tell me I'm stupid, my art sucks and whatever I want to do is wrong and I should do it their way. I think they live vicariously through their students and like parents of cheerleaders and football jocks, they want us to do what they wanted to do...........Fuckers.
All I really know is that I plan to serve good tequila without the lime and salt. So there.

BIO
Born in British Columbia, Canada, Jocelyn has traveled and lived in many locales, all of which influence her personal outlook towards art, the environment and society. Her last home was Lake Tahoe, Nevada where she attended Sierra Nevada College and after fulfilling an extensive program in preparation for a career in art received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in May of 2009. Now a resident of Oakland, California, Jocelyn is pursuing her dream and continuing to develop her personal style in painting, ceramics, photo and assemblages. She plans on completing her education, working towards an MFA, at a local university. Her work is displayed in Galleries, Hospitals, Schools and Private Collections in California and Nevada.
Artist's Statement
Mass-produced objects are an abundant and ever-present medium which I manipulate to create seemingly organic installations and objects. A respect for the environment and attention to carbon neutrality is one of the parameters in which I work although not necessarily obvious in the final piece. The minimalist organic nature of the textural landscape defies its manufactured quality while lighting and shadow as well as specific location combine to heighten the ambiguity of the material. My work embraces the process of acquisition, and as a collector of other people’s objects I am interested in the energy of things, the memories they hold and the past they have lived. I explore impermanence, fragility, hope, futility and decay and embrace the meditative qualities of repetition using multiple media to express the exploration of alternative mediums whether installation, objects, performance, photography or video.
The end results are a study in the texture of a material that is overlooked for its artistic contributions and encourage viewers to participate visually and physically – to come closer, explore, remember and share. To me a successful piece initiates a conversation and seduces the viewer into an interaction, touching, sharing a memory, opening a dialogue.
